Alasdair Hunter is a Scottish theatre director and educator whose work spans classical theatre, contemporary performance and interdisciplinary artistic practice.
Working internationally, with a particular focus on the United Kingdom and Central Europe, his practice brings together rigorous textual investigation, ensemble collaboration and a commitment to making theatre that speaks directly to contemporary audiences.
Artistic Practice
My work begins with the belief that theatre is a living encounter between performers and audiences.
I am particularly interested in the possibilities of classical texts when they are approached not as historical artefacts but as urgent, contemporary works. Shakespeare is central to my practice, providing a space in which to investigate power, identity, political structures and the contradictions of human behaviour.
My approach combines close textual analysis with a physically engaged, collaborative rehearsal process. I am interested in how the actor’s body, the architecture of performance and the relationship with the audience can reveal new possibilities within familiar material.
Increasingly my practice also explores the intersection of live performance, immersive environments and emerging technologies.
Shakespeare.scot
I founded Shakespeare.scot to curate international projects and cultural exchange rooted in the plays of William Shakespeare, fostering collaboration between Scottish and international artists.
